The Damanhur Federation numbers 1,000 citizens and is a United Nations award-winning sustainable community, Damanhur is an eco-society based upon ethical and spiritual values. Founded in 1975 and located in Valchiusella, Italy, the Federation of Damanhur is now an internationally renowned center for spiritual, artistic and social research. Damanhur is an eco-society, a federation of communities and eco-villages with a continuously evolving social and political structure.

The aims of Damanhur are: the freedom and re-awakening of the Human Being as a divine, spiritual and material principle; the creation of a self-sustaining model of life based on ethical principles of good communal living and love; harmonic integration and co-operation with all the Forces linked to the evolution of Humankind.

Since 1998 the Federation of Damanhur has been a full member of GEN Europe. GEN (Global Eco-villages Network) is an NGO comprising hundreds of communities, people and research centers. GEN was founded in 1995. Its main aim is to support and encourage the evolution of sustainable settlements across the world. The UN has recognized GEN as a consulting member of its ECOSOC Commission

Damanhur has established itself in Valchiusella, in the alpine foothills of Piedmont, bordering on the Gran Paradiso National Park. Located in the heart of Europe 45 km from Turin, the Italian territories of the Federation are located throughout the valley.

Damanhur numbers 20 small communities, each community having approximately twenty members. In total the communities occupy more than 50 houses. Another 400 supporters live nearby and participate regularly in its activities. They are contributing to the creation of a new social model based upon solidarity, volunteering, a respect for the environment and the sharing of ethical and spiritual values.

The territories comprise approximately 400 hectares of woodland; residential development and farming land and another 100 privately owned buildings, artistic workshops, studios, companies and farms. Damanhur has centers in Italy, Europe and Japan and maintains contact with spiritual groups worldwide.

The Federation has internal schools for boys and girls up to 13 years of age, a daily paper, a publishing house, a Constitution and a University that is open to researchers from all over the world

David Kanaley director of Environmental Planning Services at Byronshire Council in Australia, in 'Eco-villages, A Sustainable Lifestyle' of June 2000, states: "Damanhur is the best example found of a collection of eco-villages - a Federation - with a strong spiritual philosophy and work ethic. ...

…. Damanhur has a strong spiritual foundation with a clearly defined philosophy and cultural and personal development program. Because of its strong spiritual basis and focus on work and actions, Damanhur is very successful as a Federation of Eco-villages, particularly in the development of business enterprises. Everyone in Damanhur is employed and most on site"

Oberto Airaudi
The Founder of Damanur

Damanhur was born of a dream. A dream of a society based on optimism and the idea that human beings can be the masters of their own destiny, without having to depend on outside forces.
This was the vision of Oberto Airaudi when, together with a group of fellow researchers he founded the spiritual, human and social experience of
Damanhur. Today, in accordance with the Damanhurian custom of taking animal names, Oberto Airaudi uses the name 'Falco' (Falcon).

The Temple of Humankind
(Il Tempio d’Uomo)

The Temples of Humankind, built in the heart of the mountain, are a series of underground Halls where art and beauty become a means of communication with the Divine.
The rooms are connected to each other on different levels in a pathway that is liked to the journey that every human being undertakes from birth to death and again at rebirth: the Temples of Humankind for those who enter represent a real initiate path.

In the Temples of Humankind every architectural element and detail follows a precise code of form and proportions according to an ancient language thousands of years old. Every room is devoted to a specific magic function, and the whole complex represents the application of 30 years of spiritual search. The Temples are a three-dimensional book that can be read by those with the knowledge to read it, just like the Pyramids and the Gothic Cathedrals.

The Temples are an alchemical laboratory and a place for meditation; they are a collective work, a metaphor for the way in which Damanhur builds itself. The Temples contain the elaboration of the symbols and the spiritual pathways of every epoch and of all worlds. The Temples are a demonstration of what can be realized by the creativity of a human group animated by a common ideal.

Art and the Temples

In Damanhur, Art is the preferred instrument for growth and transformation. The citizens of the Federation have created the Temples of Humankind, an extraordinary building in which the arts inspire the flowering of intuition, new thought and new ways of living, so much so, that life itself becomes a work of art. Gary Alexander, professor of England’s ‘Open University’ in his book ‘eGaia, Growing a peaceful, sustainable Earth through communication’, Lighthouse Books 2002, writes:

Damanhurians transform all their territories into places of inspiration, where Spirit and Form are not separate and spiritual conquests manifest in the practical results of everyone’s work. The sacred, in Damanhur, is a concrete reality that is born out of sharing; the offer of individual creativity and the strength derived from common ideals.”

‘The major part of the walls are decorated inside and out with paintings and there are mural paintings representing gigantic plants and animals. Statues, altars, works of art are spread throughout the territories. Damanhur has constructed a magnificent underground temple, with painted walls, mosaic floors and Tiffany glass ceilings. Leaflets on notice boards and their newspaper report news of games, theater and musical events and courses of every kind. One gets the pleasant sensation that for Damanhurians, creativity and the arts have taken the place of the race to consume.’

Every year, thousands of people visit Damanhur to experiment with its social model, study its philosophy and meditate in the Temples of Humankind, the great underground construction carved by hand out of the rock by Damanhur’s citizens. Many have defined it as the Eighth Wonder of the World.

The Hall of Water, of the Earth, of the Spheres, of Mirrors, of Metals, the Blue Temple, the Labyrinth, the Temples of Humankind are an underground work of art, created entirely by hand and dedicated to the divine nature of Humanity. They are a great three-dimensional book that tells the story of Humankind through all forms of art. A pathway to the Divine inside and outside of the self. In the Temples every detail has significance, following precise codes of form and proportion. Every Hall has its own specific resonance and sound.

The Temples of Humankind symbolically represent the inner rooms of every human being. Walking through its halls and corridors corresponds to a profound inner journey. The Temples weave their way inside the mountain for more than 8,500 cubic meters on five different levels, linked by hundreds of meters of corridors.

The Temples are a great laboratory where Science, Technology and Spirituality are united n the search for new paths for Humanity. As in the Renaissance, the construction of the Temples of Humankind has inspired the creation of of art and craft workshops for which Damanhur has become known all over the world - In line with the growth of the Temples – which represent the highest expression of collective artisitic expression – Damanhurian society has refined itself and created the basis for its own culture and tradition.

Synchronic Lines

The Temples are sited at the meeting point of Eurasian and African continental plates whose movement has brought to the surface an ancient mineral, over 300 million years old. This mineral known as Milonite carries the physical energy of the Earth. The Temples were constructed inside a seam of this particular mineral which precisely follows the flow of the ‘Synchronic Lines’ of the Earth. The Synchronic Lines are great rivers of energy that surround our planet and link it to the Universe, transporting ideas, thought and dreams. The Temples of Humankind rise up on a shinning knot; the point at which four of these Lines meet.

Damanhurian Credito

The Federation promotes an economy based on cooperation and solidarity. In order to use a means of exchange exclusively dedicated to growth and development, Damanhur has created its own complementary currency system: the Damanhurian Credito. The Credito is accepted in many retail outlets of the Valchiusella and in centers linked to Damanhur in Italyand abroad.
The Credito is a bearer of high ideals. It was created to restore meaning to the original idea of money, as a functional instrument that facilitates exchange based upon mutual agreement.

During the conference ‘MONEY MOVES–away from Greed and Scarcity’ held in the Ecovillage of Lebensgarten, near Hanover in Germany, July 2003, the economist Bernard Liaetar one of the creators of the Euro and best selling author of ‘The Mystery of Money’ and ‘The Future of Money’, said: ‘In the West the only reality I’m aware of where a complete complementary currency system is working, is the Federation of Damanhur’.

In full compliance with Italian law and staying within the administrative obligations of company owners and interested individual operators, purchases from the economic activities present in Damanhur provide for and privilege the circulation of the Credito as a system of internal exchange. The Credito is also accepted in many retail outlets in Valchiusella and in centres linked to Damanhur in Italy and abroad.

Today, in its traditional form, the Credito assumes the same value as the Euro. On arrival in the Federation it is possible to change currency at the Welcome office or by means of specially located change machines positioned around the territories. Unused Credito can easily be re-converted into Euro at the Welcome Center.

Damanhurian philosophy

The Philosophy of Damanhur is based upon optimism. Every human being contains a divine principle and is part of an active spiritual eco-system that includes higher and higher forces. The physical form that we inhabit, and the dimension of time and space in which we exist, are transitory. The principle goal of the human being is to become conscious of his inner divinity and render matter sacred, in order that the universe can become a conscious part of God.

The search for the inner self and God coincides, with the human being acting as a bridge-Form between the spiritual and material planes. All human beings contain this completeness within and can use it as a crucible for transformation, to harmonize spirit and matter. It is important that humankind elevates the quality of its relationship with the world and life itself, through the choices that it makes and the action that it takes. The comprehension of who we really are is founded on dynamic aspects: a harmonious and continuous inner transformation, the overcoming of personal limits, the capacity to measure ourselves through action and practical work, the respect for all forms of life, be they subtle or physical.

Another fundamental principle of Damanhurian philosophy is that everything changes. At every new step the pathway can change and it is possible to discover horizons that were unimaginable a moment before. Consequently, Damanhuris a society that continuously evolves and transforms. The exaltation of the differences between individuals is considered vital in encouraging collective spiritual growth.

Damanhur represents a life choice based upon experimentation, a game of transformation to go beyond the limits of habit and reach a wider vision of reality. Research is important in all fields, from social structure to alternative energy, from the Arts to Physics. Citizens of the Federation constantly study, explore and experiment to reach a deeper understanding of the universe and the role of human beings in the divine plan. Humility, constancy, the ability to be amazed and a constant desire to play the game are indispensable in the realization of all Damanhurian research projects.

Damanhurian society is structured in such a way that spiritual research is combined with every day life. All Damanhurians can participate in research groups called ‘The Ways’ that recall the idea of ancient corporations. The Way of Art and the Word, the Way of the Oracle, the Way of Health, the Way of the Monks and Esoteric Couples, the Way of the Knights, are all involved in different sectors of research. Music, dance, health, rituality, education are just some of the experimental fields of these socio-spiritual pathways.

In a tragic period in which more and more peoples and races are disappearing, impoverishing the culture and diversity of all humanity, Damanhur is creating a new human group with its own artistic, philosophical and cultural expression. The People of Damanhur are not linked by blood ties, but by profound spiritual choices, values such as sharing, solidarity, positive thinking and an active commitment to re-awaken human consciousness on this planet.
